Press Release: Intergovernmental Conference : the Commission proposes an addition to Article 7 of the Treaty on respect for democratic values

The European Commission adopted a proposal on the 4 October 2000 for an addition to Article 7 of the Treaty on European Union, in order to introduce a surveillance and warning mechanism ahead of the penalties provided for in the event of serious and persistent breach of the fundamental principles on which the Union is based. It will submit this proposal to the Intergovernmental Conference on the revision of the Treaties.
