Press Release: Intergovernmental Conference: Commission presents additional contribution on reform of the Community courts

President Romano Prodi, in agreement with Commissioner Michel Barnier, responsible for the Intergovernmental Conference (IGC), has presented a contribution on the reform of the Community courts Court of Justice (ECJ) and Court of First Instance (CFI). This additional contribution to the Commission Opinion of 26 January 2000 follows the report by the Working Party presented on 4 February 2000. It proposes solutions to the problem of the expansion in Community litigation: greater responsibilities for the national courts in preliminary ruling procedures, jurisdiction to be conferred on the CFI in direct actions, adaptation of the two Courts' membership in the light of their caseload.
