Press Release: Institutional reform: Commission presents guidelines for its internal operation in an enlarged Union

The operation of the European Commission in an enlarged Union is one of the major topics addressed by the Intergovernmental Conference on the reform of the institutions. On 22.11.00, at the initiative of Romano Prodi, the Commission President, and of Michel Barnier, the Commissioner with responsibility for the reform of the institutions, the Commission adopted a communication on the internal organisation and operation of the college. Confirming the opinion it adopted on 26.1.00, the Commission proposes amending the Treaty to strengthen the powers of political guidance and organisation conferred on the President. It also outlines certain possibilities for adjusting the internal operation of the college.
