The European Parliament's plenary session held a debated and voted a resolution on 10 March 2016 regarding the human rights situation in Egypt.

The debate focussed on the case of the Italian PhD student Giulio Regeni. He was investigating trade unions in Egypt when he went missing on 25 January 2016. His body, bearing signs of torture, was discovered nine days later in Cairo. Media and human rights activists have since then suspected Egyptian security forces might have been involved, which the Egyptian authorities deny.
