Press Release: Harassment of humanitarian workers in Darfur: European Commission insists on respect for international humanitarian law by all parties

The European Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid, Louis Michel, has expressed his "grave concern over the continuing violence against civilians in the Sudanese province of Darfur, as well as about the deteriorating security conditions for humanitarian organisations". He launched "a new appeal to all parties involved in the conflict to guarantee the integrity of humanitarian organisations and respect for their personnel – to allow them safely to carry out their assistance and protection mission, where this is required to meet the needs of civilians, as laid down in international humanitarian law".
