In a speech given on August 1, at a remembrance ceremony marking the 60th anniversary of the beginning of the Warsaw Uprising, Chancellor Gerhard Schröder called upon Poland and Germany to expand their partnership into a 'pact for the future' that will benefit the people of both countries as well as a free and united Europe. Warsaw Uprising: The uprising of the Polish Home Army was an attempt to liberate the capital city from German occupation. The fighting raged for sixty-three days, from August 1 until October 2, 1944, costing the lives of more than 150,000 Poles and resulting in the destruction of Warsaw. The Warsaw Uprising should not be confused with the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising which was organized by the Jewish resistance in April 1943
