Press Release: G8 Education Ministers have decided to step up cooperation

The Education Ministers of the G8 and Ms Reding, the European Commissioner with responsibility for education, met in April 2000 in Tokyo and Okinawa at the invitation of the Japanese Presidency. They have submitted to the Heads of State and Government, who are to meet in July 2000, proposals for adapting our education systems to the new economy. Four main sets of conclusions were adopted:
1. Reducing obstacles to the mobility of students, apprentices and teachers
2. Promoting the use of new technologies in teaching.
3. Developing lifelong education and training.
4. Developing instruments for comparing the practices and results of educational systems
