On 16 June 2016, the European Commission decided to refer Hungary to the Court of Justice of the EU for failing to comply with EU rules on the rights of cross-border investors in agricultural land.

The European Commission sent a letter of formal notice in October 2014 and a reasoned opinion in June 2015 requesting the Hungarian authorities to bring their rules into line with EU law. As the Commission had not been notified of any measures taken to remedy the situation, Hungary had been referred to the Court of Justice of the EU.
