On 6.3.01, the first ministerial meeting between the EU and the new US Administration was held in Washington. The EU foreign policy Troika, chaired by Swedish Foreign Minister Lindh and also Javier Solana, the High Representative for the EU Common Foreign and Security Policy, met US Secretary of State Powell. This encounter follows Mr Powell's recent visit to Brussels and his meetings with Romano Prodi, President of the European Commission and Chris Patten, European Commissioner for External Relations. Items for discussion included cooperation on consolidating peace and democracy in the Western Balkans, the Middle East, security policy issues, Russia, EU enlargement, non proliferation, UN issues and US extraterritorial legislation. In addition, the participants prepared for the forthcoming EU/US summit to take place in June 2001. |
