The Spanish Government tabled its memorandum proposing EU official status for Catalan, Basque and Galician languages to EU Foreign Ministers meeting in Brussels on the 11 December 2004. In addition, they called for these languages to be included under the EU 'Lingua' programme. The proposals could have far-reaching and positive effects for Europe's other minority languages. The Irish Government also made their proposals for official status for Irish. The Council has now requested the Permanent Representatives Committee to examine the requests.
