Press Release: European Commission requires cadmium batteries for electric vehicles to be replaced with safer substitutes by 2005

The European Commission decided on 6 March 2002 to propose a ban on the use of cadmium batteries in electric vehicles from the end of 2005. Cadmium can cause serious damage to human health and the environment, and alternatives to cadmium batteries already exist on the market.
