Improving the availability of suitable medicines for children is the theme of a consultation paper published by the European Commission on 28 February 2002. Over half the medicines used to treat children in Europe today have never been specifically tested for them. Children represent 20% of Europe's population. The consultation paper lists the objectives that any new rules aiming to remedy the shortage of child-specific medicines should meet, and suggests ways to attain them.
