Press Release: European Commission authorises Belgian scheme to assist combined transport

A Belgian aid scheme to assist combined transport was approved by the European Commission on 5 July 2005 to run for three years with a budget of €30 million a year (including €15 million in 2005). The aim was to help rail maintain its existing traffic of 300 000 ITU (intermodal transport units), rather than lose it to the roads, and to increase the level of rail traffic by 20% over a period of three years.
