On 21 March 2001, five years after the launch of the Euro-Mediterranean partnership, the European Commission called for enhanced Euro-Mediterranean cooperation in the transport and energy sectors. The Communication sets out priorities for action over the period 2000-2006 as part of the initiative to reinvigorate the Barcelona Process. The transport and energy sectors are of key importance to the success of the Euro-Mediterranean free trade area scheduled to be in place by 2010, and are also crucial in terms of cooperation between the Union and the countries on the southern fringes of the Mediterranean with regard to security of energy supplies and environmental protection. |
