On 6 June 2001 Pascal Lamy, EU Trade Commissioner, expressed his disappointment at the US Administration's decision to initiate an investigation which could lead to significant restrictions on US imports of steel from third countries. Acknowledging the difficulties faced by some parts of the US steel industry, Mr Lamy said 'The cost of restructuring in the US steel sector should not be shifted onto to the rest of the world'.
