Pascal Lamy, European Commissioner for trade, visited Brazil on 8-10 July 2001 in an effort to further strengthen the European Union's ties with Mercosur and to co-ordinate efforts with Brazil on launching a WTO Round in Qatar. Mr Lamy emphasized the support of the EU for the Mercosur political and economic integration process and discussed with his Brazilian counterparts how to ensure progress in EU-Mercosur negotiations in the light of the fifth negotiation round which took place in Montevideo on 2-6 July 2001. |
