1 March 2001 the European Union removed all textiles quotas from imports from Sri Lanka with immediate effect. In return, Sri Lanka brought down a range of tariffs and bound all its tariffs for the textiles and clothing sector at the World Trade Organisation (WTO). The quotas were lifted under a landmark agreement initialled in December 2000, approved by the Council of Ministers on 26 February 2001 and applied from 1 March 2001. This was the first agreement under negotiating directives the European Commission received from the Council of Ministers on 9 November 2000, with a view to seeking improved market access for Community exports in the sector. |
