On 15 December 2003, the European Union launched a new police mission in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM). 'EUPOL Proxima' succeeded the EU's 'Concordia' peacekeeping military mission, which expired that same day. It is the second EU police mission following the 'EUPM' that was launched in Bosnia and Herzegovina on 15 January 2003.
