The European Commission announced on 11 December 2003 it will support a project to co-ordinate the prevention and management of crises in medical emergency research. There are 100 million medical emergencies every year in the European Union. The infrastructure to respond to these events varies considerably between countries, but particular concerns about bio-terrorism and new diseases (e.g. SARS) show that Europe must prepare for these threats at a transnational level. The HESCULAEP project ('Health emergency national regional programmes for an improved co-ordination in pre-hospital setting') will help to network national research programmes, and is funded under the new ERA-NET Scheme as part of the Sixth Framework Programme. |
