As the political and humanitarian situation in the Central African Republic (CAR) progressively deteriorated in 2013, the European Commission continued to mobilise its development aid to help people and improve their security. On 5 December 2013 the Poliitical and Security Committee of the EU endorsed a request from the African Union (dated 21 November 2013) addressed to the European Union for funding of €50 million for the African-led International Support Mission in the CAR (AFISM-CAR). On 8 December 2013, the European Commission announced that it was deploying its humanitarian air service with immediate effect to open up a vital line of support into and out of Bangui, the capital of Central African Republic (CAR), as international efforts to stabilise the strife-torn country intensify. Also in December 2013, France led a military operation in the CAR in a bid to stem the inter-religious violence in the troubled former French colony. The UN Security Council supported the move as did the African Union. |
