Press Release: EU and Turkey open contacts on harmonising Turkish law

A further step in the implementation of the Helsinki European Council's decision on Turkey was made on the 22 June 2000, through the opening of structured contacts to intensify the harmonization of Turkey's legislation and practice with the rules and legislation of the European Union. Such a strategy equally implies the preparation of the process of analytical examination of the EU 'acquis communautaire' - i.e the whole set of EU rules and legislation. As a further step in that direction both the EU and Turkey has agreed on the necessary structures and mechanism.
