On 16.3.01, coinciding with the visit of Mrs Kumaratunga, President of Sri Lanka, to the European Commission, the EU and Sri Lanka signed an agreement providing for the liberalisation of textiles between the two sides. The agreement lifted all textiles quotas with Sri Lanka in exchange to tariff reductions by Sri Lanka and the binding of all its tariffs for the textiles and clothing sector at the World Trade Organisation.
