On the 23 October 2014 the European Commission announced that it was providing an additional €5 million to respond to the needs of the growing number of refugees in Ethiopia. The country has become the largest refugee-hosting nation in Africa: it was sheltering more than 643 000 refugees. Most of them were fleeing the conflict in South Sudan and were facing malnutrition and the risk of epidemics. The new funding brought the Commission's humanitarian aid in Ethiopia to €31 million for 2014. The aid would be channelled through humanitarian partners, including United Nations agencies and non-governmental organisations. |
