The European Parliament's plenary session backed on 15 December 2015 a non-legislative resolution calling for the Energy Union to provide citizens with secure, sustainable and affordable energy.

Members of the chamber considered that this objective would demand concerted efforts from member states to reduce their dependence on energy imports, by integrating their energy markets, improving security of supply, making the best use of existing and renewable sources, and moderating demand.
