The European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) published on 11 September 2015 an Opinion concerning the ethical dimension of technologies.

The EDPS, Giovanni Buttarelli, urged the European Union and other international stakeholders to promote ethics in future technology, in order to retain human dignity and to prevent reducing humans into data subjects.

Mr Buttarelli also announced the creation of an Ethics Board, set up to help to better assess the ethical implications of how personal information is defined and used in the big data and artificial intelligence driven world.
