Items debated included the positive potential of the euro and the Presidency work programme in the Ecofin area. Priorities for the Portuguese EU Presidency were EMU, economic policy and employment; financial services; tax policy; and financial management. The Council approved opinions on the progress of the stability programmes of Finland, the Netherlands and Ireland, and the convergence programmes of Sweden and Greece (text of Opinions contained in Press Release). The Council decided to set up a High-Level Working Group on Taxation, which would have its first meeting in February 2000. The Portuguese Presidency stressed the political importance of the Group. |
