The European Commission on 7 February 2006 presented a new Communication on interoperability of digital interactive TV. The Commission held the view that compulsory technical standards imposed by regulators were not necessary for the roll-out of interactive digital TV in Europe. Instead, this dynamic market was best served by voluntary, industry-led standardisation initiatives.
