Dermot Ahern, the Irish Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources, revealed on 4 March 2003, that Ireland had exceeded EU requirements in relation to carrying out safety checks on foreign ships entering Irish ports during 2002. This follows a decision by the EU, in June 2002, to bring an action against Ireland in the European Court of Justice for failure to enforce legislation on the state control of vessels. The Minister said that possible action by the EU against Ireland for failing to meet safety inspection rates in previous years may now be dropped. |
