On 2.2.01, new rules governing customs transit procedures were agreed by the European Commission and the EC-EFTA Joint Committees set up under the two conventions (on transit, and on simplification of formalities in trade in goods) linking the European Community with the members of the European Free Trade Association (Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein) and the Visegrad countries (Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia). The reform has a dual purpose: to make customs procedures more fraud-proof, offering better protection of Member State and EC financial interests, and to cut administrative formalities for business, allowing easier movement of goods within Europe. |
