Press Release: Cross-border healthcare: Health Ministers and civil society call for closer co-operation

Health Ministers from current and future EU Member States as well as representatives of Europe's healthcare sector, Members of the European Parliament and Health and Consumer Protection Commissioner David Byrne met in Brussels on 8 December 2003 to conclude the informal 'High Level Process of Reflection on Patient Mobility and Healthcare Developments in the EU'. They endorsed a report containing 19 recommendations for action at EU level. These range from work on information systems to making the cross-border purchase of medical services easier, to further clarifications of patients' rights and the use of the EU's Structural Funds to improve hospitals and clinics in the new Member States.
