The EU’s Privacy and Electronic Communications Directive came into force on 26 May 2011, requiring the consent of website users before cookies can be put on the hard drive of their computer. However, the UK Government, working with the Information Commissioner’s Office, said that organisations and businesses that run websites aimed at UK consumers would be given up to 12 months to ‘get their house in order’ before enforcement of the new law begins.
