Press Release: Commissioner Fischler underlines the importance of fisheries monitoring and control at international conference

At an international conference on fisheries control organised by the European Commission in Brussels from 24-27 October 2000, Franz Fischler, European Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries, said that fisheries monitoring and control were at the heart of the Common Fisheries Policy. Mr Fischler noted that greater co-operation between the players, industry participation, the use of new technologies and the improvement of the cost/effectiveness ratio of control were the key to strengthening the implementation of fisheries rules for achieving sustainable fisheries throughout the world.
