Press Release: Commission sets out long-term strategy to rebuild cod and hake

On 12 June the European Commission adopted a Communication on the need for long term recovery plans for cod and hake stocks. According to the Communication, a combination of measures are required, including limiting fishing activities, setting of Total Allowable Catches (TACs) strictly in accordance with the targets set for the recovery plan, using technical measures such as bigger mesh-sizes and improving control and enforcement. Following consultations with stakeholders and in the light of the most recent scientific advice, the Commission will present its formal proposals to the Council and the European Parliament towards the end of 2001. The Commission hopes that the rebuilding strategy will be adopted in Spring 2002 so that it can be implemented from mid-2002 at the latest.
