After an extensive restructuring and staff review exercise, the Commission has set out its requirements for extra staff in Letter of Amendment No 1 to the Preliminary Draft Budget for 2001. Last year the Commission already carried out its biggest-ever staff redeployment exercise in order to cover personnel requirements for its new tasks. It has announced that it will also need an extra 1 254 posts for its core tasks, a large proportion of which will come from further internal redeployment. New posts will be requested in two waves - 400 posts in 2001 and another 317 for 2002. The Commission is also proposing to convert budget appropriations for outside staff into 100 permanent posts, but this will have no effect on the budget. The Commission's establishment plan would thus be increased by 2.8% to a total of 17 587 officials, boosting in particular its departments for competition, foreign policy, consumer and health protection and environment policy. |
