On 11.12.00, the European Commission proposed to amend current road safety legislation to make the wearing of seat belts compulsory for all vehicle users, where fitted, in coaches, trucks, vans and passenger cars. Young children should also be protected by an appropriate child restraint in passenger cars. These proposals reflect best practice in Member States and are building on safety improvements made by the automotive industry. They will bring greater harmony to intracommunity travel and will contribute to saving a significant number of lives, both of adults and children, that are today lost in road accidents in the EU.
