On 22 March 2001 Michel Barnier, European Commissioner for Regional Policy, signed the second EU Programme for Peace and Reconciliation in Northern Ireland and the Border Region of Ireland (2000-2004). The Programme aims to reinforce progress towards a peaceful and stable society and to promote reconciliation in the region and is unique in Europe. It follows the work pioneered in the Special Support Programme Community Initiative established between 1995 and 1999. |
