On 25 April, 2008, the Commission allocated €1 million to support the European Humanities University (EHU) in exile in Vilnius. The EHU is currently the only independent Belarusian University that allows Belarusian students to study without political interference. The allocation was financed under the European Instrument for Democracy and Human Rights (EIDHR) and formed part of the Commission’s continuing efforts to support Belarusian civil society and in particular Belarusian students and youth. This allocation was paid into a designated Trust Fund for the EHU, which was set up by the Nordic Council of Ministers. The Commission was the first donor to commit funds to the Trust Fund, which is open for financial contributions from all international donors to the EHU |
