Press Release: Commission calls on Romania to implement vigorously the Medium Term Economic Strategy and its Action Plan

The Commission published on 19 July 2000 its assessment of the Romania government Medium Term Economic Strategy (MTES) and Action Plan. The timely implementation of the Action Plan will improve the overall economic situation of the country and help Romania increase international credibility and attract foreign direct investment. Moreover, it includes policy measures that are conducive essential in preparing Romania for the fulfilment of the Copenhagen economic criteria for EU accession. The Commission proposes therefore to monitor closely their implementation in the coming years by setting up two independent monitoring groups - one in Romania and the second one international, in close co-operation with the International Financial Institutions.
