Competition policy continued to be a busy field in 1999 with total new cases reaching 1,200, of which 512 in the state aid area alone, an increase of 15 percent on the previous year, and 300 mergers and acquisitions versus 245 in 1998. Most significant in the M&A area was the unprecedented number of in-depth probes reflecting concern about the high degree of market consolidation in several markets. The 29th Report on Competition Policy gives an overview of the main developments in these fields as well as in antitrust, were the accent was on completion of policy reform on distribution and other vertical agreements and on modernisation of rules with a view to step up the fight on price-fixing and market sharing cartels. |
