Over 90% of the general public in the EU recognise the importance of agriculture and are keen to learn more about it, according to two Eurobarometer surveys carried out for the Agriculture Directorate-General of the European Commission among farmers and the general public towards the end of 2000. The level of importance attributed to agricultural issues by both farmers and the general public far outweighed their awareness of the policy underpinning the sector; for example, only 50% had heard of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP)
