The European Commission approved on 21 December 2001 payment of €40m of the Community contribution for 2001 to the Chernobyl Shelter Fund. The EC first pledged €90.5m . The amount was transferred to the Fund and has been spent. At the second pledging Conference held in Berlin in July 2000, a second amount of €100m to be paid in four instalments over the years 2001-2004 was pledged. The Chernobyl Shelter Fund was constituted at the end of 1997 in order to implement a project to transform the existing sarcophagus into a safe and environmentally stable system. The project is on schedule and is to be completed in 2007. |
