Press Release: Candidate countries to join European Environment Agency (EEA)

On 16.1.01, the European Commission adopted a series of proposals which will enable the 13 Candidate Countries to join the European Environment Agency (EEA). This milestone in the enlargement process makes the EEA the first European body open to the candidate countries already before their accession. Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Cyprus, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Romania, the Slovak Republic, Slovenia and Turkey could start joining the Agency gradually during 2001, upon ratification of the agreements. Candidate Countries' participation in the Agency offers numerous benefits for the Candidate Countries and for the environment of Europe as a whole.
