Health and Consumer Protection Commissioner David Byrne welcomed the political agreement reached by the Council of Health Ministers in Luxembourg on 29 June 2000 on a proposal for a directive to harmonise the manufacture, presentation and sale of tobacco products in the EU. The Council has continued the rapid progress in securing agreement on this key health protection measure since the Commission presented its proposal in November 1999 and the European Parliament adopted its opinion on 14 June 2000. The Commission now looks forward to a speedy adoption of the proposal in the second stage reading. |
