EU Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries Franz Fischler has expressed disappointment at the decision by the US administration to provide $23 billion in the form of direct and production-linked subsidies to farmers in 2001. Reacting to President Clinton's decision to sign the farm spending package into law, Commissioner Fischler said he regretted another annual and ad hoc farm policy from the US. 'While the EU has frozen its farm budget, this is the fourth time in three years that the US Congress has thrown additional money at agriculture, with serious potential consequences for world markets. I sympathise with those in America who say this is not very good policy.'
