In a speech to the World Stock Exchanges Conference in London on 7.2.00, Chief Secretary of HM Treasury, Andrew Smith, identified three fronts on which EU countries need to make progress on capital market reform. These involve developing an efficient pan-European capital market by 2003, pushing for completion of a competitive EU retail financial services market to maximise consumer choice and developing a fully integrated pan-European high risk and venture capital market. These three aims have been developed from the context of the reform of UK financial services as applicable to building a single European market in financial services, which will be taken forward at the Extraordinary European Council, Lisbon, in March 2000. |
