Date: 07/12/1995 Spanish Prime Minister Felipe Gonzalez has put his foot down - the new single currency will not be known as the 'franco' as long as he is around. Gonzalez's remarks generated hoots of laughter at a news conference with Italian Prime Minister Lamberto Dini, who accidentally mentioned the late unlamented Spanish dictator Francisco Franco. Dini replied to a question by saying that Italy had no preference for a name for the currency, but added: “We know it won't be called the lira or the franco.” Gonzalez adopted a horrified expression: you can bet your bottom dollar it won't be called the franco, he said, or words to that effect. But Gonzalez knows the pressure is on him to steer this month's summit in Madrid to a final decision on what to christen the money - not least because President Jacques Santer is beginning to complain that the Commission can't possibly start promoting a one-money Europe until it has got a name. |
