The European Commissioner for justice and consumer protection told media sources in September 2016 that she believed Volkswagen could be hit with fines and compensation claims in several member states of the European Union should these countries decide that it broke consumer protection and honest trading rules. The German automaker already faced similar claims in the United States for widespread emissions cheating. The Commissioner stated that the company had wronged European consumers when it rigged its diesel engines to emit more toxic gases than allowed and then lied about it in the advertising. Media reported in January 2017 that VW faced its first European lawsuit in Germany. |
