Portuguese President Anibal Cavaco Silva threw the bailed-out eurozone country into disarray on the 11 July 2013 after rejecting a plan to heal a rift in the government coalition a government rift, igniting what critics called a 'time bomb' by calling for early elections in 2014. By the 19 July 2013 the Portuguese newspaper Diário Económico reported that on the fifth day of meetings between the country’s three main parties, the PS, PSD and CDS-PP, hopes were fading of reaching a deal over how to implement President Aníbal Cavaco Silva’s call for 'national salvation'. |
