Portugal seeks exemption from EU state aid rules to help banks

The head of Portugal's central bank, Carlos Costa, defended in May 2016 the creation in the country of a mechanism similar to Italy’s ‘Atlante’ fund, in order to recapitalise some struggling banks.

Mr Costa asked for exemption from EU state aid rules so that this mechanism for purchasing non-performing loans could be set up.
