After Portugal's three main parties failed to agree on how to proceed with tough austerity measures, Portuguese President Anibal Cavaco Silva backed the centre-right coalition government in July 2013.

The possibility of a snap election had raised fears the country would be unable to abide by the terms of its €78bn bailout. The President's move was seen as ruling out a quick election.
